The Learning Cafe
The Learning Cafe
The Learning Cafe, REAL@Caledonian was developed by Les Watson and opened in 2001 in the Library on the Glasgow Caledonian University City Campus. The cafe was one of the first of its kind providing a venue for students to work on their projects and course assignments and putting the emphasis on conversational learning. It has 200 seats and quite deliberately only 80 computers. The emphasis is on group work, project work, and problem based learning - the technology is there if needed but this is not an internet cafe, it is for people to exchange ideas and learn through conversation. The Learning Cafe is a space for people - not dominated by technology. As well as being available to Glasgow Caledonian University students it is also open to the public as part of the Glasgow REAL Learning Network, which has over 115,000 registered lifelong learners. The Learning cafe has been visited by many University groups and people from other organisations from the UK and other parts of the world.
