I am a freelance educational consultant who has worked in education for 40 years as a teacher, lecturer and researcher in computers in education and as a senior manager. Since 2006 I have worked with Universities, Colleges and Schools advising on innovative learning space development, undertaking IT and Library reviews and providing keynote speeches to conferences and staff development events (see here for list of clients). I worked as interim Director of Information Services at Royal Holloway University of London on a part-time basis in 2007/08 and developed the new learning space in the Bedford Library called TLC@Bedford. I have also worked as an expert consultant to the Joint Information Systems Committee e-learning programme on Technology Enhanced Learning Environments. In 2007 I was an invited keynote speaker at a series of seminars on Places and Spaces for Learning organised by the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education in Australia and also gave an address to the Universities Australia Vice Chancellors conference in 2010. I am also currently a visiting Professor of Learning Environment Development at the University of Lincoln.
Before taking up consultancy I was Pro Vice-Chancellor at Glasgow Caledonian University (1999 to 2006) with responsibility for librar, C&IT Services, student services, e-learning, the Caledonian Degree and work based learning all of which were integrated into a University wide Learning Service. During my time at Caledonian (2001) I led the development of the Learning Café, REAL@Caledonian that received international recognition as an innovative learning space and in 2006 I opened the award winning Saltire Centre.
I was also the Project Director of the JISC Digital Libraries in the Classroom Spoken Word Project, which develops access to streamed digital audio resources and promotes their use in the curriculum. I also wrote for Online in the Times Educational Supplement for many years. I have produced synopsis papers on aspects of Higher Education for the European Parliament, contributed to a number of books on the use of IT in education and was the author of Multimedia in Schools - The Transition from Primary to Secondary Schools for the Scientific and Technological Options Assessment Office of the European Parliament. I am a fellow of the RSA, have been a member of the Universities and Colleges Information Services Association (UCISA), a former chair of the annual UCISA management conference committee, a former member of the JISC Board and am currently also a registered consultant with the Higher Education Academy.
I was also lead consultant for the JISC Infonet project on Developing Technology Rich Spaces for Learning, and co-author of a report for the JISC on The Design and Management of Open Plan Technology Rich Learning and Teaching Spaces in Further and Higher Education in the UK.
